Projected Free Energies for Polydisperse Phase Equilibria

چکیده
A “polydisperse” system has an infinite number of conserved densities. We give a rational procedure for projecting its infinite-dimensional free energy surface onto a subspace comprising a finite number of linear combinations of densities (“moments”), in which the phase behavior is then found as usual. If the excess free energy of the system depends only on the moments used, exact cloud, shadow, and spinodal curves result; two-phase and multiphase regions are approximate, but refinable indefinitely by adding extra moments. The approach is computationally robust and gives new geometrical insights into the thermodynamics of polydispersity. [S0031-9007(97)05163-6]

Dissertation Structure , thermodynamics and phase behavior of a polydisperse colloidal mixture
In this work we have studied the thermodynamic properties and the phase transitions of simple polydisperse systems, where we direct our attention on the fluid phases only. In our study we have treated a polydisperse system as a n-component mixture in the limit n → ∞ where the particle diameters are distributed continously within a range [σmin, σmax] and the concentrations of the various particl...
متن کاملPhase Equilibria of Polydisperse Colloids
A set of colloidal particles (be they sterically-or charge-stabilized) can never be made truly identical. They are polydisperse in their sizes (or charges), and their interactions are a function of that property. A truly polydisperse system in the thermodynamic limit contains innnitely many species. Therefore, calculations of phase equilibria involve innnitely many coexistence constraints (a di...

Ab initio and DFT methods have been used to study the seven tautomeric forms of 5-methylcytosine molecule. The related tautomer in gas phase have been studied at HF/6-31G, HF/6-31G* and B3LYP/6-31G* levels oftheory. The structures, enthalpies, entropies,Gibbs free energies, relative tautomerization energies of tautomersand tautomeric equilibrium constants were compared and analyzed along with full ...
متن کاملPredicting phase equilibria in polydisperse systems
Many materials containing colloids or polymers are polydisperse: they comprise particles with properties (such as particle diameter, charge, or polymer chain length) that depend continuously on one or several parameters. This review focuses on the theoretical prediction of phase equilibria in polydisperse systems; the presence of an effectively infinite number of distinguishable particle specie...
متن کاملEquilibrium glassy phase in a polydisperse hard-sphere system.
The phase diagram of a polydisperse hard-sphere system is examined by numerical minimization of a discretized form of the Ramakrishnan-Yussouff free-energy functional. Crystalline and glassy local minima of the free energy are located and the phase diagram in the density-polydispersity plane is mapped out by comparing the free energies of different local minima. The crystalline phase disappears...
